About the Department and/or College

Established in 1923, TTU is a Carnegie R1 (very high research activity) Doctoral/Research-Extensive, Hispanic Serving, and state-assisted institution. The Purpose of the TTU SVM is to serve the veterinary educational and veterinary service needs of rural and regional communities, and to provide access to affordable world-class education. The TTU SVM is located in Amarillo, Texas, adjacent the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) regional campus. The TTU SVM enjoys state-of the art facilities, and maintains populations of domestic animals, and the region is home to large numbers of production animals and wildlife providing further opportunities for field-based scholarship.

The School and the focus of its comprehensive veterinary medical education program are founded with the following objectives:

  • Graduate practice-ready, competent and confident veterinarians who will serve rural and regional communities across Texas;
  • Provide access to affordable, high-quality veterinary medical education for Texans;
  • Develop a research-intensive School that enhances and complements the strengths of TTU and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC), and addresses the needs for research and expertise in veterinary medicine, food- and fiber-animal production, and the health sciences;
  • Provide opportunities for graduate education and research, and advanced clinical training in internships and residencies;
  • Support sustainability of livestock industries as they feed growing state, national, and global populations; and
  • Improve human, animal, and ecosystem health by integrating innovative One Health activities into our educational, scholarship, and service activities.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education (COE) granted the TTU SVM provisional accreditation in 2021. The School has enrolled its first three classes.

Major/Essential Functions

  • This position reports to the Dean and also coordinates closely with the Institutional Veterinarian, , and the (IACUC). The primary functions of this position are to:
    • Provide oversite and support of day-to-day treatment and care of TTU SVM-owned animals. This includes working closely with TTU SVM personnel (students, staff and faculty) on implementing therapeutic plans;
    • Collaborating with TTU SVM personnel on development of Animal Use Protocols;
    • Provide oversite and where appropriate, maintain medical records of TTU SVM- or client-owned animals;
    • Collaborate with TTU SVM personnel to develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOP) for use of animals in instruction and scholarship;
    • Serve as TTU SVM point of contact for and monitor DEA controlled substances used in instructional and clinically-relevant scholarship activities;
    • Develop plans in coordination with the Institutional Veterinarian and ACS so that TTU SVM adheres to relevant institutional, State, and Federal requirements;
    • Provide periodic training for students, veterinary technicians, and animal caretakers for the care of animals housed at the TTU SVM.
  • Additional job functions include:
    • Contribute to activities necessary for accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education, and other regulatory or accreditation approvals, and admit and deliver the curriculum to the students of the professional degree program.
    • Participation on the following committees:
      • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; and
      • The TTU SVM Veterinary Clinical Studies Committee.
  • Given the interests of the successful candidate, the position may further contribute to instruction, scholarship, and service activities. To serve as illustrative examples, this might include involvement in classroom or laboratory instruction, participation scholarship activities, or community engagement through off-campus clinical instruction such as in an animal shelter or a clinic that partners with TTU SVM.
A competitive salary and benefits package will be provided commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, 12-month, academic appointment. Opportunities for the successful candidate to supplement their salary through is afforded by TTU. In addition, Appointments may be tenure- or non-tenure-track depending on the preference of the successful candidate.

Required Qualifications

  • DVM (or equivalent) is required, with experience in veterinary medicine.
  • Licensure or ability to be licensed in the state of Texas is required.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Candidates who have a successful track record in veterinary clinical medicine;
  • Candidates with a track work of collaborative team work;
  • Candidates with experience with the regulations that govern the use of animals in teaching and research. However, the extensive training opportunities will be provided to the successful if this experience is lacking; and
  • Candidates with subject-matter expertise (specialization) in a relevant area of veterinary medicine. Subject-matter expertise may be demonstrated by related graduate training, veterinary diplomate status (or eligibility), or other experience.
