Reporting to the Service Manager or Building Supervisor, the Custodian is responsible for cleaning assigned areas of buildings as part of maintaining a clean, healthy and safe environment for students, faculty and staff. This role may also act as a lead person to assigned custodial staff. The Custodian also performs duties as a project crew member consisting of floor stripping/scrubbing and refinishing. Carpet shampooing and floor buffing may also be assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide collection and disposal services for wastepaper, trash and debris and recyclable materials
  • Vacuum carpeting, dry sweep, dust mop and damp mopping of hard surfaced floors
  • Clean and sanitize washroom/shower room fixtures
  • Dust, damp wipe, wash and polish furniture and fixtures using a ladder up to 6 feet tall and at times using scaffolds
  • Use scrubbers, buffing and shampooing equipment
  • Make beds and set up occupant rooms
  • Move furniture when required
  • Clean kitchen floors according to Health Department standards, as required
  • Shovel snow and spread ice melting compounds
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to demonstrate both reading and writing comprehension and competency skills
  • High School diploma or equivalent, along with a minimum of 6 months of cleaning experience
  • Ability to use manual and automatic scrubbers, buffers and shampooing equipment
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Previous cleaning experience of at least one year in an academic or health care environment
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to lead other custodians in assigned tasks
