Title: Negotiator Location: Any city with close proximity to a Major Airport About Us: The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest housestaff union in the United States. A local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing over 20,000 resident physicians and fellows. Our members are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities. Job Summary: The Committee of Interns and Residents, the largest resident physicians' union in the country, is looking for a Negotiator. The Negotiator reports directly to the Director of Strategic Campaigns. This position is responsible for working with elected bargaining teams and serving as the union's chief negotiator for select first contract negotiations, high priority bargaining tables, and other campaigns including other critical union campaign projects as assigned. Job Responsibilities: * Provide analytical support to CIR's bargaining tables * Understand health system operations, including finance, structure, and governance, and how they relate to residents * Ability to perform power analysis * Ability to negotiate contracts as the first chair * Draft contract language * Craft and navigate effective table strategies * At assigned tables serve as negotiator, managing table strategy, and compiling their contract costings and basic research * Understand resident daily work life, the structure of training programs, terminology, and role in hospital operations * Educate CIR leaders and staff on their findings to ensure robust and well-informed table strategies * Work closely with the Regional Director and Contract Organizer developing and implementing comprehensive contract campaigns * Communicate and coordinate with the CIR's Directors (e.g., Political, Research, Communications, Regional, etc.) to tie collective bargaining campaigns to strategic initiatives of the Union * Communicate with CIR's Legal Department to ensure employers are meeting their legal bargaining obligations and to ensure charges are filed when appropriate, etc. * Develop and train bargaining teams Qualifications: * Ability to independently draft complex contract language * Understand and create resources to advance bargaining tables * Ability to facilitate the learning of others * Familiarity with labor law (in all jurisdictions we represent), libel/free speech laws, major laws related to health care industry and collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, mediation, and arbitration processes * Outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable * Demonstrated ability to contribute to creating a positive work environment that encourages personal responsibility, initiative, and innovation * Excellent independent judgment and ability to build relationships * Strong writing skills for clear and accurate drafting of proposals, agreements, employer correspondence, and leadership and member communications * Demonstrated ability to handle multiple high priority projects with competing deadlines * Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships * Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and support role * Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills * Technologically savvy * Thorough knowledge of MS Office programs * Proficiency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Drive (docs & sheets) * Demonstrated ability to think strategically and act proactively * The ability to thrive and operate in a fast-paced, mission-driven with quick thinking, energy, humor, flexibility, and above all professionalism * Analytical skills in mathematics and statistics * Proven ability to work with a diverse group of people, from union members to union staff and leaders * Ability to critically evaluate one's own performance, incorporating feedback into improving performance * Ability to develop one's own skills, acquire relevant knowledge and proactively seek opportunities to learn * Strong written and verbal communications * Ability to engage and move bargaining committees * Demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior * Strong planning and time management skills, ability to develop work plans with minimal supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks * Analyzing employer proposals and working with Union bargaining committee to facilitate strategy discussions, develop responses and counterproposals, and advance the bargaining * Demonstrates an interest in the work and the membership * Desire and commitment to advance the organization * Proactively identifies the needs of the organization and responds with solutions Experience: * Minimum 4-year degree, BA/BS, preferred but not required * Minimum 5 years relevant negotiations/research/organizing experience * Analytical skills in mathematics and statistics * Mastery of arithmetic, basic statistics, and related software such as Microsoft Excel * Proficiency in contract costing * Experience serving as a negotiator and negotiating first contracts * Proficient in drafting CBA language * Valid driver's license * Ability to work long hours and irregular hours including evenings and weekends * Willingness to travel and work in different states for determined periods of time as needed This job posting may not reflect the complete job description Salary and Benefits: * This is a full-time salaried position.
